Maha Mrityunjaya Homam — the Homam of Victory over Death
The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is among the most revered invocations in the Rig Veda, addressed to Lord Shiva as Mrityunjaya — "the conqueror of death." Devotees traditionally perform this homam as a prayer for courage, wellbeing, protection and peace.
These are spiritual practices and expressions of faith; they do not replace medical advice or treatment.
Beyond its role in health and longevity, the homam is understood as an inner practice — a surrender of fear itself at the feet of Shiva. The repeated offering of ahutis (oblations) into the sacred fire while chanting the mantra is said to steady the mind, dissolve anxiety, and awaken a quiet fearlessness that stays with the devotee long after the fire has been offered.
Ganapathi Homam — Why, For What, and How
Before setting out for the Tripura Samhara, Lord Shiva himself is said to have paused when the axle of his chariot broke. Guided by the sages, He understood that no undertaking should begin without first invoking Vigneshwara — the remover of obstacles — and worshipped Ganapathi before proceeding. This is the origin of the enduring custom: every task, ceremony, and homam begins with Ganapathi Pooja, because even Shiva bowed to him first.
The yajaman (performer) formally seeks the elders', priests', and assembled devotees' permission and blessing before the ritual begins — an acknowledgment that no sacred act is undertaken alone.
A precise declaration of intent — the date, place, nakshatram, gotram and the specific purpose for which the homam is being offered — spoken aloud with water held in hand.
Purification of the space, the materials and the participants through consecrated water (punyaha jalam), preparing everyone and everything for the sacred fire.
The sacred fire (agni) is invoked and consecrated as Ganapathi himself. Ghee, samidha and navadhanya offerings are made while the Ganapathi mantras are chanted, traditionally 108 or 1008 times, invoking his grace as ahutis rise with the flame.
A final, complete offering (purnahuti) closes the homam, followed by mangalarathi and the distribution of theertham and prasadam to all present.
In yogic tradition, Ganapathi is associated with the Mooladhara — the root chakra — the seat of stability, grounding and self-belief at the base of the subtle body. When the Mooladhara is steady, the energy of the chakras above it is believed to flow without obstruction. This is why Ganapathi Homam is regarded as the foundation ritual: it is thought to settle the root chakra, sharpen mental clarity, dissolve inner and outer obstacles, and lay the ground for lasting success in whatever is undertaken next.
